Building a Search-Ready Site With an AI Builder

AI builders remove the setup work, not the SEO work. This walkthrough shows the order to work in so the site you generate is actually indexable and useful.

Educational guide · Reviewed September 2026

Step 1 — Write the page map first

Before prompting anything, list the URLs you intend to have and the single job of each page. Six to eight pages is plenty for a first build. A page map written in advance prevents the most common AI-builder outcome: an attractive site with nothing specific on it.

Step 2 — Generate structure, then replace the words

Let the builder produce the layout, navigation and components. Then remove every generic sentence and write the real content: your scope, your prices, your process, your area. Generated placeholder copy is the fastest route to a page that ranks for nothing.

Step 3 — Give every page its own metadata

Each route needs a unique title, a unique description and exactly one H1 that matches what the page is about. Templates that apply one site-wide title to every page waste the clearest signal you control.

Step 4 — Canonicals, one per page

Add a self-referencing canonical on each page. Do not put a canonical in a shared layout — it will point every page at the same URL, which tells crawlers your entire site is one page. Pick one trailing slash convention and use it everywhere, including internal links.

Step 5 — Check what is actually rendered

Fetch a page and look at the HTML the server returns, not just the browser view. If the meaningful text only appears after JavaScript runs, indexing becomes slower and less reliable. Confirm the heading, body copy and links exist in the initial response.

Step 6 — Status codes and 404s

Visit a URL that should not exist. It must return a genuine 404 status with a helpful page, not a 200 response showing the homepage. Soft 404s waste crawl budget and can get junk URLs indexed.

Step 7 — robots.txt and sitemap

robots.txt should allow the pages you want found. The sitemap should list only canonical, indexable, finished pages — no drafts, no thin placeholders, no redirecting URLs. A sitemap full of pages you are not proud of is an active liability.

Step 8 — Mobile and performance

Test at 360 pixels wide. Check tap targets, form usability, heading sizes and that nothing overflows horizontally. Compress images and avoid loading large scripts you do not need.

Step 9 — Internal links

Link the hub to each child page, each child back to the hub, and every informational page to the commercial page it supports. No page should be reachable only from the sitemap.

Step 10 — Publish, then verify in Search Console

Submit the sitemap, check that pages are discovered and indexed, and watch which queries produce impressions. Only after real data arrives should you decide what to build next.
